Code Geass Dub is TERRIBLE!!!

I don’t know if anyone knows but i hate, HATE WITH A PASSION, Johnny Yong Bosh. He sounds the same in every damn thing he does and this dub of Code Geass is just the same as all his other roles. I just saw the first episode of Code Geass online at AdultSwim.com and i have to admit, i hated every minute of it. Kallen sounds like a whinny bitch, C.C. Sounds too monotone, Lelouch sounds just… TERRIBLE! Rival sounds like he’s trying to be too damn cool. Shirley sounds like a dingbat (oh wait she is) but worse in this dub, Milly sounds like she’s in love with Lelouch. Orange-kun sounds like your generic bad guy, Suzaku sounds like a sissy. it’s easy to say that I don’t like dubs, if you honestly love anime why not watch it in its original form.

What made Code Geass worthy for me in reality was the seiyuu performances, Fukuyama Jun’s performance was what made me keep watching Code Geass. He is Lelouch! His performance embodied the character so well, it’s impossible for me to imagine anyone else playing this role as well as he does. You don’t go see a foreign film dubbed do you? You watch it in it’s original language! You can’t watch Life is Beautiful in English and not expect it to lose it’s charm and flavor! You can’t see Pan’s Labyrinth and hope that the story still makes sense in english! Why should anime be any different! Would you appreciate going to another country and seeing Gone with the Wind in Dutch or German or any other language? Would Rhett Butler sound the same? Would “Frankly i don’t give a damn” sound the same? It won’t, so if you love anime so much why watch it butchered in this fashion.

You can see this horrible dub in action here, but i won’t recommend it.

I very much agree with you. In Japan voice work for animation is a highly sought after and respected field. It is still not so here.

I watched Code Geass season 1 subbed and after hearing what you said, very glad I did. Plus I do not like editing for TV. Not that there was a lot to edit, but who knows what is taken out?

I just finished writing up my take on season 1 (with pics) if you are interested.

  6. first of all it isn’t bad i don’t see what is so bad with it i mean it isn’t like they changed the words and i personaly cant stand it in its original i can stand reading the whole flipin thing i mean whats the point of watching it why not just read the book of it…. i liked how the voice artists made them come to life it wasn’t butchered your probably not use to hearing normal sounding people from america and i bet you prob learned the languge they speak in the films idk what one because there are like 1000 types and im not a huge anime fan i have only watched 5 animes and one thing i like about animes is over use in experssions makes me laugh like when they dress up for the celebration of arthour and they all dressed up in cat outfits and they have that teary momment that is way over expessed (but i loved it and i love animes and the awnser to your question about why not watching them in the original form is 1. im not reading it or i would buy books .> then it annoys me later and lastly watching it in dub is just suspensful i mean you have to wait for the next season to be changed into english and to me how c2 says in the wall of eternity i am completly and utterly alone and lulush says you are not alone we are acomplacis if yo uare a witch then perhaps i should be a demon awsome part did it for me and also the part when they kiss is awsome i hope they in the end they stay togather even if they die i personaly think there a perfect match anyways i liked some of the artical im not much of johhny young boshes fans eather ( just my ideas here not telling you to think diffrent or anything) and comment 55 come on be nice X} deamons never fall is outa here X]

  8. Code geass dubbing sux says:

The first dubbed episode of Code Geass was a joke! None of the VA’s sounded like they were serious about their acting. The Japanese voice acting is just SO much better I immediately stopped watching after the first episode.

Lelouche’s english VA did a terrible job of trying to play the part. As soon as I heard his voice I knew the rest of the season would be terrible so I’ll stick with subs for CG.

  9. Pantsu says:

    Woo. I agree.

After playing Devil May Cry 4 and watching some english dubbed Bleach episodes, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was listening to Nero/Ichigo while I was watching the eng dub. JYB’s voice wasn’t pompous enough either. In spite of this, I still think he did an above-average job. 🙂

….It’s just that the Jap seiyuu performances were much better! (In reference to CG people, not a general statement.)

  10. Nana says:

well I am currently watching it in english and personally I like it better that way ’cause I don’t have to read the subs and I can actually enjoy what’s happening in the anime 😀
but anyway, everyone has their own opinion 😉

  11. Lint says:

I don’t know how you can tell a Japanese voice does good voice acting, that is unless you understand Japanese yourself. I actually believe the dub is spectacular. Lloyd in particular has a superior dubbed voice.

  12. Zivon says:

”I like it better that way ’cause I don’t have to read the subs and I can actually enjoy what’s happening in the anime”

that’s pretty much why anyone would watch Dubs.

But some people need to stop hating on Dubs. if they’re so terrible just don’t care about them. but appearently you made a whole article just so you can tell people you dislike something. Why?!
I dislike many things, do I put them on the internet? NO because everybody dislikes things. and nobody gives a damn about anything anybody dislikes.
Japaneese version exist for those who like watching that, Dubs exist for that same reason. don’t watch things you don’t like, don’t eat food you don’t like, don’t do games you don’t like ect. ect. it’s not rocket science.

Also: A true Anime fan can accept his fellow fans. they can accept dubs. they care about the characters, and not the real human behind them. Japaneese, French, Afrikan, Dutch, Deutsch, English; Lelouch is Lelouch no matter what language he speaks.

  13. Victorious Day says:

Well, I loved the Dubbed Version. I think Johnny’s voice is amazing. He does a great job as Lelouch, Ichigo, and I heard he was Vash, but I never saw that so…no comment on that show. Anyway, I don’t get the disappointment because Bosch sounds the same in every anime….well…he’s only got one voice. Besides, I remember seeing CG in the sub version with that voice actor and then I saw an Anime “Special A” with that same actor and their voices were exactly the same. Point being, everyone’s voices sound the same, it’s just a matter of what you do with it and Bosch has the creative talent to do a good job in my opinion.

Anyway, I enjoy the dubbed voices much more. I think because I can decipher their characters/personalities much better than I could in japanese versions because in subs, their voices all run the same for me because it’s not easy for me to see. They did an excellent job with the dub. But we’re all going to be bias because whatever we naturally grew up with watching first, we’re likely going to appreciate that version more than the one we’re not used to, such is the case with subs and dubs all the time.

  14. NaryliaN says:

    Greetings!

I would just like to add I think it is wrong to say that it was terrible and that JOhnny has the same voice and so on.

It’s the exact same with the Japanese version.

Don’t get me wrong I love both versions because I love the story and enjoy from both subbed/dubbed version of it.

I really get that it is best in Japanese becouse it’s the original but I think it’s up for the person to deceide.

    Hugs NalleN

  15. tokumei says:

Well, there are a few important things to realize.

Most animu isn’t dubbed, and it will never be dubbed. You’re also missing out on discussing the currently airing series.

Also, and a lot of the original meaning is lost with the plot. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing after watching the CG dub a few episodes in. Plus, English voice actors cannot sound super kawaii.

  16. Crystal says:

Personally, i preferred the subbed version because they were the ‘original voices’. I’m always wary on watching dubs because their tone of voice and expression changes with the way they say their lines, changing the personality of the original character. Therefore i was on the same page as the poster; i thought they made Karen sound like annoying since her Japanese seiyu’s voice was more gentle and cool. Anyways, what I’m trying to say is even if the translations are accurate, voice actors help shape the characters, which is why i stick to the original. That said, i do think that CG’s dub was pretty decent. Most of the cast was solid (yes lelouch’s voice was more boyish compared to the japanese’s deep one, but this voice also fitted quite nicely with his appearance) with a few that stuck out as poor to me (Shirley, Nunnally, Euphie).

In the end, it all comes down to one’s opinion and preferences. But before making an uninformed opinion, try the other option first and compare the differences. Yes the dub was pretty good, but the Japanese one was stellar and delivered the full extent experience. I suggest trying the original to enjoy the utmost experience. It might be hard to read the subs at first, but you’ll get used to it and even pick up some Japanese along the way 🙂

  17. Otter says:

Ah, on the contrary, I thought it was decent. Think of it this way: it could’ve been worse. While it wasn’t of the best quality, it was still nice. I highly doubt that you could do any better, and if you can, that’s awesome for you! In fact, even if you were the best English voice actor the world has to offer, I can guarentee you that you’re going to have a handful of haters out there – simply because it’s an English adaptation and not the original Japanese production.

You should be grateful that these companies go out of there way to dub series upon series just for the so-called “fans”. Don’t be a Japanese-obsessed prick. In fact, don’t even watch it if all you’re going to do is complain.

Ahahaha. Don’t mind me. Have a nice life!

  18. SupperGyabo says:

I personally love the dub in the anime. English totally fit in this anime. Seriously hearing Japanese voice doing some voice with the Emperor and Britanian is quite not what you expected with them. Japanese voice give them tone as the bad guy. Love the jap voice actor of the emperor but you cannot totally tell him quite mighty tone due the fact you always hear him in every anime as the bad guy and some hentai. The same thing with Jap voice actor you always hear them in every anime so what’s the issue for our dub voice actor being overrated. Jap voice actor are always overrated you always hear them in every anime. The only thing i hate with dubs is how they always correct things that should not be corrected like CC to C2. Common CC is quite a cool name and VV but changing it to a C2 and V2 oh god that is the worst. Gotta agreed with all Gals in this anime being portrayed by english voice actor. They make them as whiny bitch except CC. CC should be lifeless doll due the fact she hates living until she met Lelouch. Her English Voice actress done a terrific job except for Kallen english voice actress is quite disappointed.

  19. Kaz says:

I have not watched a single dub that I would choose over the original audio. The difference in quality is like the difference between an ant and the sun. I actually believe that people who watch dubs have a lower IQ average than the people who don’t. Johnny Yong Bosch has absolutely NO range, he is just like Crispin Freeman, he is cast for the superficial appeal of the sound of his voice more than any sort of vocal talent. I have actually watched the dub and I find it to be terrible, although the worst dub that I have seen would have to be the Bleach dub *shudders*, which ironically also has Bosch in it for the main role. Ironic?

  20. Jordan Sonnentag says:

Jonny is so awesome he doesn’t need to sound different. Voice acting isn’t about making sure you sound different, it’s about playing the part.

  21. Indigo says:

I don’t understand what the controversy is between dub and sub?

Just because its a dub doesn’t necessarily mean its bad. I see no problem with most dubs and still find the anime enjoyable mostly because I personally believe the plot is most important overall.

What I find ironic is that people hate dubs even if they aren’t bad and its the language they freaky speak. When presented a choice I prefer the dub because its the language I freaky speak.

I guess that people don’t like dubs when compare to subs is because they don’t sound exactly alike. When the voice actors in the west tried to find their own impression of the character and what they believe will sound and talk like, they are jumped on and criticized by the internet because they don’t sound 100% like their Japanese counterparts. These are voice actors, not voice imitators and both countries have different accents so that isn’t even an option. I guess dub haters just are overwhelmed with nostalgia.

But what the hell do I know? The American companies could be just be dubbing popular anime because they are evil and retarded bastards only looking for money. How dare they even touch these holy master pieces from Japan and tried to introduced it to a whole new generation of potential anime fans around the world. God, what idiots, right?

  22. cakekiller16 says:

I’m sorry. i dont usually hate on people for talking bad about anime dubbing and i can see some points this person who wrote this made. but, for as bad as it can be, i fucking love the dubbing. i have seen the first and second season of code geass in the dub, and im sure if i watched japenese dub i’d like it better, i really felt the emotions and intensity of the voice actors as they played they’re characters. i liked it and i dont very much feel that the person who wrote this gave the dub a good chance.

  23. The Logical Side says:

Love how the comments section turned into a Dub vs. Sub argument. First of all, I would like to say that in my opinion, the japanese voices are usually better. However, I am not biased at all, and american voice actors can also do a fantastic job. Some animes that I think had really good american voice actors, or at least better than the Japanese version, are Dragonball Z, Fruits Basket, School Rumble, Ouran High School Host Club, etc. However, most Japanese originals are better then the dubs. There is just more character in their voice that matches up with the character in the show. I think a lot of times, original fans get all butt hurt over dub fan rants, and vice versa. In my opinion, dub fans only like that because it is their language, original fans like that just because it’s the original, so to them, enything else is worse. I watch both, so I like both, and hate both as well. There are some animes that I just could not imagine the characters with English voices at all, like Sword Art Online or Jormungand. Code Geass was another of those. It felt like this dub was sub-par really. It may just be because the original was so good, but Lelouch just… Didn’t sound in character with his voice, and some other mains, namely Shirley and Kallen, just had pretty bad VA’s all together in my opinion. I think a lot of the minor characters were well done in the dub though. While I do not agree with the writer of this post on all their comments, I do agree with general summary that it was below the Japanese version in quality. And seriously, for all of the idiots in the comments section criticizing this, it’s just an opinion, so don’t get your underwear in a twist, it’s not a big deal if you disagree with someone over the internet over something as trivial as what language a show sounds better in.

  24. Ninja Vanish says:

Code Geass is my favorite anime of all time. I was fortunate enough to first watch it with English subs, thus the first version people see is usually their preference. That said, I tried to watch it with English dubs, but I couldn’t stand it! I watched the first 7 episodes, but I couldn’t finish. As soon as Lelouch spoke, I cringed. He’s so much more commanding and authoritative sounding in Japanese. If it were real life, and Lelouch talked like he does in the English version, I’d just laugh because I know it’s some dumb teenager playing hero in a costume, and then give the order to shoot him. Abrupt end to the series. People are welcome to their opinions, but in mine, Japanese Lelouch is worlds better! English Lelouch can’t even pronounce his sister’s name correctly. It’s Nunnally, not “Nonnally.” Honestly every time I heard it spoken wrong I said her correct name out loud.

The only voices that I thought were decent were Cornelia’s and Lloyds’s. CC’s was okay.

  25. I’m late lol says:
